A CASA volunteer with a child
What does a CASA do

One volunteer. One child. One purpose.

When a family is in crisis and a child enters the child welfare system, a CASA steps in — a trained community volunteer who gets to know the child and advocates for their safety, permanency, and well-being.

The most important thing about fighting dragons is not fighting them alone.

Guiding principles

What guides our advocates.

Family first

Family first

We keep the child’s best interests and family connections at the center of every recommendation.

Awareness

Awareness & education

We help the court and community understand each child’s full story.

Community

Community support

We connect children and families to the services they need to heal and thrive.

The role

Sworn to one child’s best interests.

A CASA gathers the full picture — from family, foster parents, teachers, doctors, and social workers — and advocates in court and at school. Sworn in as an officer of the court, they stay with their child until the case reaches a safe, permanent home.

Stories

In a volunteer’s words.

Anne Mortensen on what it means to be a CASA.

Be the one

Change the trajectory of a child’s life.

Children with a CASA receive more of the services they need and are more likely to succeed in school.
