Through My Lens: Capturing the 5th Annual Youth Leadership Summit

There are some weekends that stay with you long after the camera is packed up—and this was one of them. We had the honor of capturing CASA of the Eastern Panhandle’s 5th Annual Youth Leadership Summit this past weekend, and we can honestly say it was one of the most meaningful experiences we’ve documented.

The weekend kicked off Friday morning on the campus of Shepherd University. We watched as the youth checked into their dorms, met their team leads, and picked up their materials for the weekend. There was excitement in the air—nervous energy, sure—but also curiosity and camaraderie as they settled in and started building connections.

That evening, SC Studios had the opportunity to participate in the Summit’s youth career fair. We set up our booth and talked to the youth about video, photography, design, and entrepreneurship. But it wasn’t just about handing out information—it was about listening to their questions, watching them practice interview skills, and seeing them light up with ideas for their own futures. Later that night, we followed them to Shepherd’s Game Zone, where laughter and music echoed as they bowled, played arcade games, and just got to be kids. The unstructured joy was a highlight.

Saturday brought a more reflective tone. We traveled to Horses with Hearts for a workshop centered on understanding personality strengths and the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). It was a powerful few hours. The youth participated in group activities, learned about therapy using horses, and interacted with the animals on the farm. Behind the camera, we saw moments of vulnerability, confidence, and growth—moments that reminded us just how important this work is.

The evening ended at Rose Hill Farm with a cookout and vision board session. As golden hour settled in, we captured images of young people dreaming out loud—putting their goals, hopes, and creativity onto paper surrounded by support. It felt like the perfect end to a weekend focused on empowerment.  As we were leaving, one youth said:

“I don’t remember your name, but you seem like a trustworthy adult.”

This is a reminder that many youth in the foster care system have a hard time trusting adults.  That is why the work that the CASA staff and volunteers do on a daily basis is so critical.  The care, attention, and encouragement they gave wasn’t performative—it was real, consistent, and heartfelt. Through our lens, we witnessed mentorship in action, and it was beautiful.

“I sooo appreciate you and everyone always being on task and ready to help anyone no matter the situation, and I so appreciate how you guys kept us fed… that makes a lot of people happy . I love what you guys are doing and I truly love you so much . I’m so excited to see you guys again and I pray we’ll have fun again.”

“On Saturday, I witnessed the quiet power of what we do: the way you adapted to each young person’s needs, how you created joy and structure, how you listened without judgment, and led with love.  Watching the youth support one another — cheering each other on, showing kindness, and building a sense of camaraderie — was deeply moving.”

“Serving at the Youth Leadership Summit for the first time was an incredible experience. It was inspiring to see our youth grow in confidence, form new friendships, and step boldly outside their comfort zones.”

Thank you to the WV First Foundation for supporting our youth programming and recognizing the urgent need to prevent substance use disorders among West Virginia’s most vulnerable youth. Children who have experienced trauma, abuse, or neglect are at significantly greater risk, and your partnership helps us deliver early intervention and supportive services that change life trajectories.

To be a small part of this weekend—documenting their laughter, quiet reflection, and bold dreams—was an honor we won’t soon forget.
