It is with the heaviest heart that CASA of the Eastern Panhandle shares the passing of our beloved co-founder, Emeritus Board Member, and dear friend, Valerie “Val” Smith.

Val’s vision and fierce determination helped turn CASA-EP from an idea into a powerful force for children and families across our community. Her heart of gold and tireless advocacy for underprivileged youth shaped not only this organization, but also the lives of countless children who found hope and stability through CASA.

Val’s impact did not end with the founding of CASA-EP. She continued to walk alongside us in our mission, showing up year after year to celebrate and support children, families, staff, and volunteers. Whether it was joining in the fun at Wrap n Rave, cheering on young leaders at the Youth Leadership Summit, or honoring our dedicated volunteers at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Brunch, Val remained a steadfast presence. She never stopped serving her community or standing up for the most vulnerable among us.

Her legacy lives on in the voices of the children who were heard, the families who found strength, and the advocates who were inspired by her example. At CASA-EP, we will continue to honor Val’s life and vision by ensuring that every child has someone by their side to advocate, support, and believe in them.

We extend our deepest condolences to Val’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. Please keep them, CASA of the Eastern Panhandle, and our entire community in your thoughts as we grieve this tremendous loss and carry forward her legacy.

From Michelle Sudduth, Executive Director: “Val was so much more than a board member—she was a mentor, a friend, and a true spitfire who never backed down when it came to protecting kids. She taught me so much about leadership, courage, and the power of one person to make a difference—which is at the heart of the CASA mission. We will carry her legacy forward with the same bold spirit she brought to helping others and making change happen.”
