Fostering Futures: A Summer of Connection, Learning, and Growth

This summer was an unforgettable season for CASA of the Eastern Panhandle’s Fostering Futures program. From leadership development to digital safety and even a splash in the pool, our youth had opportunities to learn, grow, and connect with one another in meaningful ways.

Youth Leadership Summit

In June, we welcomed more than 20 youth to the campus of Shepherd University for our 5th Annual Fostering Futures Youth Leadership Summit. Over the course of the weekend, participants took part in interactive workshops, career exploration, and vision board activities, all designed to help them dream big and plan for their futures. Thanks to the support of community partners and sponsors—including ARGOS, West Virginia First Foundation, and Highmark Foundation—the summit gave youth a safe, empowering space to build confidence and lifelong connections.

Internet Safety Training

In July, we hosted a special Internet Safety session with CASA mentor Andrew Gordon. With a background in cybersecurity and network engineering, Andrew helped our teens better understand the risks and responsibilities that come with life online. Key takeaways included:

  1. Your digital footprint follows you like a fingerprint.
  2. Only connect with people you know and trust in real life.
  3. Always think before you post or send.

This training gave participants critical tools to navigate today’s digital world safely and responsibly.

Back-to-School Bash Pool Party

We wrapped up the summer with our Back-to-School Bash at the War Memorial Pool in Martinsburg. Youth and families in the Fostering Futures program gathered for an evening of swimming, pizza, and cupcakes. Beyond the fun, these moments of connection are what make the program so powerful—siblings placed in different homes were able to reconnect, families shared meaningful time together, and youth found comfort in being with peers who understand their journeys.

Despite a little thunder in the distance, the evening was filled with laughter, joy, and community.

Why It Matters

Fostering Futures is more than a program—it’s a promise to help young people in foster care or at risk of aging out of the system build the skills, confidence, and connections they need to thrive. By combining mentoring, leadership opportunities, life skills training, and special events, we are working to ensure every youth has a strong foundation for their future.

A huge thank-you goes to our staff, volunteers, community partners, and sponsors who made this summer possible. Together, we’re breaking cycles and building futures.
