Celebrating Those Who Show Up: CASA-EP Hosts Volunteer Appreciation Brunch

On Sunday, May 18th, CASA of the Eastern Panhandle hosted its Annual Volunteer Appreciation Brunch at The Sycamore in Martinsburg—a heartfelt celebration of the incredible individuals who make our mission possible. Over 50 volunteers, staff members, judges, board members, and their guests gathered to honor the advocates who give their time, their compassion, and their voices to children navigating the child welfare system.

Volunteers are the heart of CASA-EP. As Court Appointed Special Advocates, they work one-on-one with children who have experienced abuse or neglect—ensuring that each child is seen, heard, and supported both in and out of the courtroom. From attending school meetings and court hearings to checking in with foster families and biological relatives, CASA volunteers step in when it matters most.

Some of our advocates are just beginning their journey, newly sworn in and already making an impact. Others, like Brian Truman, have been with us for over a decade. Brian, who has served for 12 years, was recognized at the brunch for his incredible tenure and continued commitment to handling some of the most complex petition cases.

During the brunch, Judge Cohee and Judge Redding captured the heart of CASA’s work with one simple but powerful statement:

“When I think of you all, I think of wrapping a child in a blanket.”

Their words resonated deeply with the room, reminding everyone that advocacy isn’t just about legal reports or case files—it’s about comfort, consistency, and care.

At the close of the event, Executive Director Michelle Sudduth received a standing ovation for her leadership and tireless efforts throughout the year. Her passion for CASA’s mission—and her support for every volunteer—was felt by everyone in the room.

Volunteer Appreciation Month is about more than recognition. It’s about gratitude. It’s about pausing to acknowledge that what our volunteers do changes lives. And it’s about celebrating the power of ordinary people doing extraordinary things for children who need them.

To every CASA advocate: THANK YOU!. Whether you’ve been with us for ten weeks or ten years, your commitment gives children in our community the chance to be safe, supported, and heard.
