CASA of the Eastern Panhandle is proud to announce the launch of its Fostering Futures Forward Mentorship Program—a new initiative designed to connect caring adult mentors with youth ages 10–18 who are involved in the child welfare or juvenile justice systems in Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan counties.
This mentorship track is an extension of CASA-EP’s ongoing commitment to ensuring every child has the tools, support, and guidance they need to succeed—not just in the courtroom, but in life.
Why Mentorship Matters
Many of the youth served by CASA have experienced instability, trauma, or frequent placement changes. As a result, life skills and supportive adult relationships—things that are critical to a young person’s development—can fall through the cracks.
The Fostering Futures Forward program was created to address this gap by pairing youth with trained mentors who can offer consistent support, encouragement, and guidance. These relationships are designed to build trust, strengthen confidence, and help youth develop skills that will serve them far beyond their time in care.
A Flexible Way to Make a Lasting Impact
The mentorship pathway offers a more flexible time commitment. Mentors commit to spending around 3–5 hours per month with their assigned youth over the course of one year.
Mentors focus on building meaningful, supportive relationships with their mentee—helping with things like career exploration, communication, and personal development.
Mentors also have the opportunity to participate in monthly engagement activities, community events, and CASA-EP’s annual Youth Leadership Summit.
Training & Support Provided
All mentors will receive initial training, focused on key topics like trauma, ACEs, adolescent development, and motivational interviewing, prior to working with youth. CASA-EP provides ongoing support, resources, and structured opportunities to engage with both youth and fellow mentors throughout the year.
Who Can Be a Mentor?
Mentors come from all walks of life. You do not need experience in social work or education—just a desire to show up, listen, and be a consistent, caring presence in a young person’s life.
If you:
- Enjoy spending time with youth
- Want to give back to your community
- Can commit a few hours a month
- Believe every child deserves guidance and opportunity
…then mentoring might be a perfect fit for you.
