Volunteer Spotlight: Julie Adelmeyer

Julie Adelmeyer became a CASA volunteer advocate because she has always been aware of the challenges facing children in foster care and the court system. After relocating to the Eastern Panhandle, she began noticing CASA’s presence throughout the community.

“I decided to become a volunteer advocate after attending several community functions where CASA had information booths,” Julie shared. “CASA also had numerous public service announcements that explained the need for advocates in the Eastern Panhandle.”

Those messages resonated with her deeply. Julie recognized that many children simply need someone to listen and speak up for them when they cannot do so themselves.

“There are so many children in our communities who need to be safe, who need to be kids and who need someone to listen to their concerns and then to be their voice. I liked the fact that being an advocate would let me do all those things.”

Seeing Each Child as an Individual

For Julie, advocacy is about recognizing each child’s individuality and potential.

“As a CASA volunteer I can take the child out of a stereotypical box and shine their individuality and talents.”

One aspect of CASA’s mission that stood out to her was the organization’s commitment to supporting families and working toward reunification whenever possible.

“The CASA philosophy of working toward reunification with the family resonated with me,” she explained. “I was amazed at how CASA enables all its volunteers and staff to not only work with the children but help parents navigate the court system and community programs to make reunification happen.”

Support Every Step of the Way

Like many people considering volunteering, Julie initially wondered whether she would be prepared for the responsibility. That concern quickly faded once she experienced the support system within CASA.

“I was amazed at the support that I have received from the CASA staff. If I am ever in doubt they are there to answer my questions and give me support.”

A Community That Shows Up for Children

Through her work, Julie has also seen how the entire community plays a role in supporting children and families.

“I have watched as the entire Eastern Panhandle community has stepped up to make sure that children in the system have what they need.”

For Julie, that community support — combined with CASA’s mission — makes a powerful difference.

“Because of our CASA program kids can be kids.”

Julie’s dedication reflects the heart of CASA’s mission: ensuring that every child has a voice, a champion, and the opportunity to grow up safe and supported.
